History

The harbour at Peterhead dates back more than 400 years and its status as a port town has seen it be a focal point for the fishing and offshore oil and gas industries. The region is renowned for fishing and its tiny harbour villages such as Portsoy and Banff still stand as they did hundreds of years ago.

If you’re into history, the Peterhead Prison Museum walks you through 125 years of prison life in what was once referred to as “Scotland’s toughest jail.”

Castles

Aberdeenshire has over 260 castles, stately homes and ruins in its region with more castles per acre than anywhere else in the UK. Its famous castle trail weaves through the region with some of the historic buildings said to have inspired well-known fairy tales and horror stories.

The nearby Slains Castle is believed to have been the inspiration for Dracula. As well as eery ruins there are many castles still in impressive condition such as the fortress like Fyvie Castle and Banff House.
